The Soulstones are blessed stones created by the archangel Tyrael. He bestowed these stones upon the Horadrim, a order of magi, to contain the three Prime Evils, Mephisto, Baal and Diablo. The three were imprisoned, but this was their intention. They corrupted the soulstones, allowing them to possess humans and use their bodies to channel their demonic power, allowing them to stay in the mortal plane with full strength.
